It’s not uncommon for a company to track sales or productivity based on seasonal cycles. You might, however, think that the HVAC industry really wouldn’t have a down time. These companies are helping us stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
There’s an in-between time, though, in many parts of the country where we don’t have much need for HVAC. Those in the industry call this the “shoulder season,” or sometimes refer to these Spring and Fall time spans as “shoulder months.”
It corresponds to when outside temperatures stay within 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The air outside is close enough to a home or building’s internal temperatures to where neither heating nor air conditioning is needed.
The term is borrowed from – or related to, depending on how you look at it – the travel industry. According to USATODAY, the most popular (and expensive) time to travel is June through August, and then again through the holidays. Some of the best deals can be found in those in-between times, which are known as the “shoulder season.”
Turning up the heat
Winter is fading, but the warmth of summer is on the way. March is a time when things heat up for the HVAC industry (pun intended). And business is booming. The HVAC services market was valued at more than $54.7 billion dollars in the United States last year. It’s expected to reach more than $78 billion by 2025.
We might think of HVAC as those boxes along that side of the house that growl during the summer, or that thing in the basement that rumbles during the winter – but things are changing fast for the industry. Technology is quickly transforming things.
More of us truly are concerned about the environment and are looking for ways to be smart about heating or cooling our homes. Green technology, especially the use of renewable heat sources are driving the sale of heat pumps. It’s expected to grow to $2.5 billion in sales by next year in the United States alone. Coupled with turning over the environmental controls to Alexa, it means your next HVAC system will more than likely have a Wi-Fi connection.
It also means more people than ever before are working in this industry. It employs more than 1.2 million people, and job growth is expected to top 15 percent through the middle of this decade.
We’ve got more than 40 “shoulder seasons” under our proverbial belt, so we’re prepared to step up and help our HVAC industry clients when they move into a peak season. One of the most popular products we create for them are adhesive backed pockets for HVAC equipment installation and operation documents. With more than 5,000 in-house dies, we can make these adhesive pockets in any size – regardless of how large or small the installed equipment might be.
