Our History

1978 – 1984

Vinyl Art, Inc. was started in 1978 in the basement of a former engineer for the purpose of manufacturing vinyl products. The company grew slowly until 1987 when it was purchased by Asset Management Corporation. After the purchase, there was a change in leadership with the hiring of Robert Roy and Tim Hitchings. Mr. Roy brought sales experience to the company and started to reach out to a broader base of potential customers. The company was making vinyl floppy disk holders for 5-1/4” disks at the time, and quickly added the 3-1/2” vinyl floppy disk holder. Along with these items, at the time there were approximately 250 different size vinyl products that Vinyl Art had produced.

1985 – 2000

In 1984 the CD ROM was invented and by the early 1990’s there was a need to package these for inclusion with computers. Vinyl Art was one of the producers of this packaging which quickly increased in volume. Vinyl Art also started another venture to incorporate the CD ROM and packaging along with the many text and reference books that included them at the time. They started and spun off Insertec, Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana which soon became a vibrant contract packaging organization.

At the same time as the CD ROM sleeves were growing, Vinyl Art continued to expand its specialty products capability.  Products grew from 300 in 1987 to over 2,000 in less than ten years. The company was involved with the Beannie Baby phenomena during the mid 1990‘s, making over 190 million vinyl covers for the heart shaped tags for the collector realm. Another popular product during this time frame were vinyl lottery ticket holders. Vinyl Art was one of the first to offer holders to the different State-run lottery games.

During the latter part of the 1990’s Vinyl Art added the capability to manufacture products from polypropylene as well. Products began with the continued CD ROM packaging and moved into the manufacture of vinyl photo pages and pockets for the safe keeping of family photos. Scrap booking was another area that Vinyl Art produced pages and pockets that were used in the storage of the photos.

Vinyl Art Inc. is also a provider to many bait shops and sporting goods stores. Vinyl fishing and hunting license holders that are decorated with the logos of the bait shops and sporting establishments have always been popular. Their ability to provide high quality vinyl holders in a variety of colors allowed businesses to showcase their brand and create loyalty with their customers. This ability to decorate with foil stamping and silk screen printing has been utilized for many different promotional items to this day.

2001 – 2013

The 2000’s continued to see Vinyl Art, Inc. add items to the product lists. During this time Vinyl Art increased its’ adhesive backed product offerings. Storage bin label holders and vinyl promotional items were growing on a rapid pace, with vinyl price tag holders for shelving and retail displays becoming prevalent. Vinyl Art adhesive holders continue to be popular and widely used in a variety of commercial and retail settings.

2014 – 2018

In 2014 Vinyl Art expanded into Ultra Sonic Sealing machine technology, purchasing a Widmann machine incorporating Ultra Sonics with variable product capability. We designed the equipment to be as versatile as possible to run both Polypropylene and PVC products. This allowed us to produce much larger product quantities more quickly and provide added value to customers. We continue to expand our offerings to our customers for products utilizing this technology.

2019 – Today

With most long-term leaders and owners retiring in 2019-2020, Vinyl Art has transitioned its leadership and ownership team.  Tim Hitchings has been with Vinyl Art since 1987 and is now President. Jill Morton has been with Vinyl Art since 2003 and is serving as our Vice President.  The ownership group consists of both Tim and Jill along with PJ Mirviss and John Mirviss.

In the new decade we have continued to grow our business and meet the needs of our customers, with over 5,000 product sizes available. We have continued to add to our product offerings and breadth of services, focusing on our customers’ needs in a changing business landscape. Along with our dedicated staff, we continue to meet customer orders in a challenging and dynamic supply chain environment.

Like most companies at the time, the pandemic in the 2020-2021 period found our leadership pondering the future of Vinyl Art.  As a company, we wanted to help, and we figured out how when an employee heard about another local company making face masks on a Minnesota news radio station.  We pivoted at that moment to figure out how to make them.  Within a month we began production while also adding creative packaging to sell these at the point-of-purchase in retail stores.  Also, as a company, we wanted to support our local hometown and chose to donate face masks to hospitals and nursing homes as well during this time.

Today we are incorporating products that are in retail-ready packaging to broaden the opportunities for customers for their display and save time in the supply chain system. We are working to lessen the environmental impact of our products by developing more Eco friendly materials and products.

We continue to review and evaluate new ideas in production methods, automation and material advances. We have adapted our operational methods and procedures to work to ensure we are able to meet our customers’ needs without interruption.

We look forward to helping you!
