You likely aren’t surprised by the names of the biggest companies with the annual Fortune 500 list comes out. We’re used to seeing Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Exxon Mobil Corporation, Apple, Amazon, and Berkshire Hathaway. These companies generate more than a trillion dollars in revenue.

What might surprise you are the names of the most successful companies you’ve never heard of. They have names like McKesson ($208 billion in revenue), AmerisourceBergen ($168 billion in revenue), Tech Data ($37 billion in revenue), and CHS ($32 billion in revenue).

What these companies have in common is that they don’t sell a recognizable product. It’s their mission to support other recognizable products. It’s why you may never have heard about Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in “serving science.” It’s own products are mostly invisible but used daily in laboratories and clinics around the world that make medications and medical devices you know well. And then there’s Jabil, which employees more than 199,000 people in 100 facilities across 29 countries. If you’re reading this newsletter on your smartphone, Jabil helped get it to you.
